Research

The research phase was focused on building a product feasible for the crowdfunding platform.  Through research and analysis of Chris Anderson’s book ‘The Long Tail’, it was found that the rise of online sales provides a perfect platform for niche products. Initially my research was focused on the exploration of different types of footwear that dealt with wet environments. Various materials and manufacturing processes were analyzed throughout this phase which led me to explore alternative materials and lockdown methods.

The concept phase involved sketching out various silhouettes ranging from a surf bootie like fit all the way to a rubber boot type feel. The idea was to create a smooth upper that was both rugged and easy to clean. The boot design is focused around trail use in wet and muddy conditions. Unlike the rubber boot, the deft wanderer was meant to be more breathable from the start and would never really be able to be fully waterproof. Although through the use of layered membranes involving Gore-Tex, a high water resistance rating can be reached.

The rugged grooves wrap around the rubber sole and meet up with alternating lugs in the middle portion of the outsole. The toe and heel areas have dedicated grip zones for inclines and declines.

Fused Upper

Fused Upper

The upper part of the boot is made up of strategically placed panels that are fused onto a breathable Gore-Tex membrane. The layered panels and toe stiffeners allow the foot to stay locked into place while also protecting the foot from sharp objects on the trail. The smooth vamp allows for easy cleanability and water resistance
